Division of Labor is the advertising agency in San Francisco that specializes in startups and companies that act like startups. Most of Division of labor’s startup clients are those that have obtained series B funding so they have the money to invest in marketing, build broader awareness, driver more website traffic and increase conversion. But there are still a lot of companies out there making these explainer videos thinking they’re marketing and creating awareness. So we thought it would be funny to hire one of these companies to explain why explainer videos were not in any way a replacement for advertising and marketing. And the company we hired, by the way, was fantastic. For a few hundred bucks we got all the edits we wanted and created the same generic explainer video that so many companies have. Of course, ours talks about rats eating people brains and dogs peeing on desks. But that’s beside the point!

Explainer videos are not bad at all. In fact, they can be incredibly effective ways to detail products, processes and companies. But they’re horrible for branding, awareness building or driving traffic. Division of Labor is one of the top ad agencies in San Francisco specializing in building brand awareness, driving traffic and increasing conversions. And explainer videos can be helpful at driving conversion once consumers get further down the purchase funnel because explainer videos are good at giving detail in video form; the most consumer media type.

The explainer video company thought it was funny. They know there is a market for their services and they were quite happy to work with a San Francisco ad agency like Division of Labor.
