CASE STUDY & TESTIMONIAL VIDEOS
One of the most important pieces of any communications platform is the case study or testimonial video. These are videos that let clients or customers detail their experiences with your product or brand. Division of Labor the advertising agency started in San Francisco creating case study videos for Microsoft. The agency produced over 30 case study videos for Microsoft alone.
Dropbox for Business case study videos all incorporate 15 second pre-roll teasers (like the one above) that push to the longer format case studies on a landing page.
The full case study video for Dropbox tells how global fashion giant BCBGMaxazria converted their company to Dropbox for Business.
For Microsoft we shot this case study about how the LA Marathon uses Office to pull off this incredibly complex event.
Case study videos are typically under 2 minutes in length and are usually shot on location to capture interview footage and B-Roll.
Case study videos are most economically created as part of a package so resources can be combined to make the cost of each video as low as possible.

It’s often difficult to produce engaging case study videos because you’re working with real people who have often never been in front of the camera. You can’t script what they say, yet you have to script what they say and there in lies the secret. Division of Labor is one of the top advertising agencies in San Francisco. The agency produced a series of videos for Microsoft Office called Real Life Stories that told the stories of how small business owners, educators and individuals use Microsoft Office. But the key to making these videos compelling is the pre-interviews and planning that goes into them. You have to know the story you’re going in to tell before you ever start shooting. Without planning and the experience of working with real people, you end up with a boring, laboreous monologue that no one wants to sit through.

There is indeed a process for how to create compelling case study videos. And nowhere in the process does it say you should just show up cold with an iPhone and ask the subject to tell their story. Division of Labor is a top advertising agency in San Francisco, but the agency is also a production company with well over 60 case study videos under their belt.
The process starts with two sets of pre interviews; one with the client to figure what they think the story is. The second is with their client to probe how comfortable they are on camera and if they can deliver the intended message. After that, we write a script; an idealized version of how the interview should go. And then when it comes time to shoot, we have a few tricks that all but guarantee that the script comes to life.
